Zahlreiche unterschiedliche Interessensgruppen sind an dem Prozess beteiligt. Fossile Energiequellen wie Erdgas, Kohle und Erdöl sind endliche Ressourcen. Bei ihrer Nutzung führen sie zu hohen CO2-Emissionen führen. Die erneuerbaren Energien basieren auf der Nutzung von regenerativen Ressourcen. Sie stehen somit praktisch unendlich zur Verfügung. Bei ihrer Nutzung gibt es kein unkalkulierbares Gefahrenpotenzial und kein Endlagerproblem wie z. B. bei der Nutzung von Atomkraft. Zu den erneuerbaren Energien gehören Sonnenenergie, Wasserkraft, Wind, Erdwärme und Biomasse (aus nachwachsenden Rohstoffen).
